Three splendid daughters

The angular shapes of the After Lowry tiles in this design are an echo of the industrial buildings that artist LS Lowry often painted. He was mesmerised by the industrial landscapes of 20th century England. The addition of the semi-circle Eclipse tile softens the impact, just like the people in Lowry’s paintings softened the impact of the buildings. People, though, were not always a source of comfort to Lowry. His mother was envious of her sister, who had ‘three splendid daughters’ rather than one ‘clumsy boy’!
